Thin Layers Of Smoke Aloft Continue

The 2 pm MST visible satellite image (above) seems to indicate mostly clear skies over southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona. However, thin layers of smoke aloft continue to cover much of the area shown above. This has led to an afternoon sky that appears leaden and strange from the ground. The image below (looking south from Kitt Peak at about 2 pm MST) shows the grayness and reduced visibility. It's a strange and miserable afternoon across the Tucson metro area, as temperatures hover around 105F. I see the Boy Scout Camp on Mt. Lemmon (almost 8,000 ft MSL) is currently reporting a temperature of 87F.
