A BLOG ABOUT SOUTHWESTERN WEATHER, Welcome to the MadWeather Blog! We have two basic rules for this blog:
WEATHER FORECASTING & OBSERVING, AND OTHER RELATED TOPICS
(1) Debate and discussion should be civil.
(2) Because public discussion, regardless of the topic,
is not very effective if we don't know who is talking to whom,
MadWeather does not accept anonymous posts.

Wildfires and Mid-May Miscellany
Serious wildfires burning in California as temperatures break 100F in many spots. AP photo above is from Carlsbad, California, and map below shows current California fire locations. Worst fire emergency is in San Diego County where homes have burned and there have been many evacuations. Here in Tucson the NWS forecast for the airport is for highs of 99F tomorrow and Saturday - so first 100 degree day might be soon.
In New Mexico the Signal fire is burning north of Silver City. This fire has grown to over 5,000 acres as of yesterday afternoon - see fire status map below.
The eastern Pacific hurricane season has begun and the NHC issued its first routine tropical cyclone activity map this morning (above - note there were several special outlooks issued earlier this month).
Here in southeastern Arizona winds yesterday were generally in the 30 to 40 mph range and dust conditions were not nearly as bad as during the previous event. Strongest gusts I saw reported were to 50 mph at the Mt. Hopkins RAWS site.
