Widespread Rains Yesterday

Stormy view to north of Kitt Peak yesterday afternoon (above) - down at bottom is view this morning. Visible satellite image below is from 3:11 pm MST yesterday afternoon. Second below shows detected CGs (from Atmo and Vaisala) for 24-hours ending at midnight last night. Most thunderstorm activity stayed to west of metro area yet again. However, storms were close enough that we had thunder here at house.

Rains of at least 0.04" were observed at all ALERT sites yesterday (above and below, for 24-hours ending at 5:00 am this morning). There were seven reports over half an inch and two reports exceeded one inch. Strangely, amounts of 0.11" occurred here at house, at TUS, at DM, and at Atmo.

The morning 500 mb analysis (above from SPC) shows trough over West with weak leading wave east of here that was associated with yesterday's storms. The time series of PW on campus (below - ending at about 5:00 am this morning) shows values recovering a bit after early morning low below an inch. there is a zone of slightly higher PW ahead of main trough, bringing some chance of isolated thunderstorms today.

Longer-term forecasts for 500 mb (above is GEFS mean for 00 UTC on September 24) keep trough over West for at least the coming week, and perhaps longer.

Looks like our next chance for rain might be associated with one of the tropical systems in east Pacific.
