Fire Continues/Thunderstorms in Cochise County/Monsoon Season

The Bighorn fire continues moving east and northward in the Catalinas this morning. Fire fighting efforts are focused on protecting Summerhaven from the blaze.

There were thunderstorms over Cochise County yesterday (radar above from 4:15 pm MST). Storms and showers redeveloped in eastern Pima County and affected parts of the metro area - radar below from 6:20 pm and 24-hour plot of detected CG flashes second below (from Atmo and Vaisala).

Yesterday, June 15th was the start of the NWS "Monsoon Season" for southeastern Arizona. The 12z 500 mb analysis this morning shows that the monsoon high (anticyclone) is currently centered over north-central Mexico somewhere east of southern end of Baja.

However, current forecasts indicate that the high will shift northward and be centered along the New Mexico Arizona border during the latter part of next week. Will showers and storms follow quickly?
