More Of Same

Nice view of large thunderstorm on north side of Catalina at 7:00 pm MST last evening.

Mostly a down day in metro area with only 16 stations in ALERT network (above) reporting light rainfall amounts - exception was the storm on north Catalinas, which produced three reports of 1 and 2 inch plus amounts.

The radar map above (base scan from NCAR RAP) is from 8:00 pm last evening - note one small thunderstorm cell over east metro area. Large cell south of airport dissipated as it tried to move north into city. Considerable lightning visible at dark, but little rain. The plot of CG flashes below (from Atmo and Vaisala) is for 24-hours ending at 1:00 am this early morning. Storms over southeastern Arizona tended to hug the mountains, much as forecast by yesterday's WRF model runs.  The 06 UTC runs of the WRF from last night forecast storms later today only over some portions of southern Cochise County, as the high aloft strengthens nearly overhead.

At bottom is photo of yesterday's only severe storm reported in the West - a landspout type tornado near Anza, California.
