Blowing Dust Yesterday On Plains

View of dust blowing yesterday afternoon in the Oklahoma Panhandle about 4:30 pm CST. Map below shows the location of Guymon. Down at bottom is photo of semi on its side near Dalhart, Texas.

Visible satellite image from about 3:30 CST yesterday shows large plume of blowing dust extending from southeast Colorado across the Panhandles to south of Wichita Falls, Texas. Below is a special statement from the Dodge City, Kansas, NWS Forecast Office.

Surface plot above is from 22 UTC. Note that numerous stations were reporting "haze" but no stations reported blowing dust or sand. The weather symbols for dust or sand are shown below. This reflects a limitation of the automated weather stations (ASOS), but humans at the NWS offices and/or FAA control towers can correct problem observations - however, no stations on map above had had the observations corrected. Another example of the somewhat sorry state of weather observing in the US.
