May Day

View of the Catalinas at 6:00 am MST this morning, showing mostly thin, high clouds. Similar view of the Rincons at bottom, but with a bit of sunrise color.

April ended with no precipitation here at house - during the past seven Aprils the total precipitation here has been only 0.10". April also had record highs on the 10th and 11th (97 and 99 F), and closed with the first 100 F day of 2023 yesterday.

A strong, blocking pattern at 500 mb (above) exists over the US, with a high-amplitude ridge over the mountain West. The ridge nudges only a bit eastward during the next 48 hours.

The NWS has issued a Red Flag warning for today, due to high temperatures and low humidity (RH fell to 5 percent at airport yesterday afternoon), and forecast gusty winds today. Graphic below (from Atmo) shows 06 UTC WRF-GFS wind speeds forecast for 2:30 pm this afternoon. Current NWS forecast indicates gusts as high as 32mph.
