In a surprise announcement (to be reported by the media tomorrow), Arizona's Republican Governor, Jan Brewer, revealed that the state will provide new support to the University of Arizona. The state money will help the University prepare for climate change associated with Global Warming. The climate of southern Arizona is expected to become hotter and drier in coming decades, thus, making a hostile desert environment even more hostile.
The University has been working on upgrades for the Athletic Department (the for-profit, professional arm of the University). Most prominent is an upgrade that is underway for the University's aging football stadium (above). A giant new scoreboard has already been completed (below), that allows alumni as far away as Casa Grande to track the score of games being played. Just beginning is an upgrade of stadium capacity, with a new seating section across the north end of the complex.
The new monies from the state will allow the university to completely enclose the stadium complex, providing a conditioned environment for fans and players during the anticipated era of a hotter and drier Sonoran Desert. Once the project is completely finished, the stadium will resemble the Biosphere (below). It is possible that the Athletic Department may raise additional funds by providing tours during the off season. Thanks, Governor Brewer!
