Heavy Thunderstorms Approaching Metro Area

Updated: The view of the Catalinas above and the radar composite below are both from 8:11 am. The strongest storms stayed along the far east side and then the Catalina foothills, while strong cells weakened over the main metro area - how many times have we seen this? Thunderstorms are now northwest of the metro area and heading away, while debris showers will continue over eastern Pima County - a very fast-evolving event. Here at the house we had a cold ouflow with east winds of at least 50 mph, thunder, but only enough rain to wet the ground.

Heavy thunderstorms have developed east of Tucson this morning and are now approaching southeast portions of the metro area - radar composite above is from 6:38 am MST. The morning sounding from TWC (below is skewT for 12 UTC from SPC) indicates steering flow from southeast at about 25 mph, high PW, and substantial CAPE. Outflow winds will help force storms in this potent, early morning environment. Storms have the potential to produce heavy rains in parts of the metro during morning rush hour.
