Severe Thunderstorms Strike At PGA Championship

We are struggling through some very hot, dog-days of summer locally, with little hope for anything more than isolated thunderstorms this weekend. High yesterday was a record-setting 107 F. The intense, 500-mb anticyclone (currently centered above Silver City, New Mexico, area) is drifting westward. Flow patterns will tend to keep best low-level moisture out to the west and southwest of eastern Pima County, even as large tropical disturbance moves northwestward to the west of Baja. Perhaps a couple of brief periods through next Tuesday when local PW will jump briefly above 1.50 inches. So, I'm taking a look elsewhere this morning.

The PGA Championship (one of the four "Majors" for the golf pros) is being played at Whistling Straits on the shores of Lake Michigan, north of Milwaukee (above). Numerous severe thunderstorms struck parts of Wisconsin and Michigan yesteday afternoon - below is CG flash density for past 24-hours From Vaisala and Weather.Graphics. Play was halted as severe winds played havoc with the facilities.

Three photos below are of: the official scoreboard; the portable studio of the Golf Channel; and some out-of-service port-a-potties.
