Brief Summary of Yesterday

There was a definite increase in activity - especially at higher elevations yesterday afternoon. Top photo is view to north of Kitt peak at about 4:20 pm MST, and bottom is view from campus toward the Catalinas at about the same time. Heavy storms developed on the Catalinas and moved off to the north-northeast. here at house we had light visible and thunder rumbling from a small cell off to the west. Watched a 737 fly right through edge of rainshaft and perhaps take a lightning hit from a CG. At 5:30 pm 20 ALERT stations had rain in past 6 hours - this morning the 24-hour count is up to 28 sites with rainfall. Rain stayed mostly to the south and to the higher elevation gauges. Four gauges had more than 1/2 an inch. Another trace day here at house with two brief spits of anvil rain during the afternoon. No measurable rainfall in the immediate, low elevation metro area.

Radar composite image at about 5:30 pm MST - note few cores and much anvil cloud over southeast Arizona.
