Strong Backdoor Cold Front

Art Douglas just sent an e-mail about the backdoor front pushing down the Front Range this afternoon. He attached the GFS surface forecast valid at noon tomorrow (Sunday the 4th) - see below. The forecast shows the front into southeastern Arizona. The high is coming south as TS Lee is trying to decide what it's going to do - linger, deepen, sink a bit south?

I had not been paying much attention - seems like we've had a summer without strong fronts coming very far south down the Plains (see post below about heat in Oklahoma). This one is particularly interesting given the role of TS Lee. Today's 23Z surface plot (below) indicates that the front is already far into northeast New Mexico - its exact position is difficult to determine since winds ahead of it are shifting strongly to the east. It appears that it will be into southeast Arizona sooner than forecast - probably before sunrise tomorrow morning. Note the VERY cool temperatures in eastern Colorado and northeast New Mexico.

Current visible satellite image is above. Narrow band of frontal cloud indicates cold front extends from southern Kansas, across the Texas Panhandle and into eastern New Mexico. The backdoor front will provide a complicating ingredient for the weather mix for the rest of the Holiday weekend. Thanks for the heads up, Art!
