Windy Afternoon Yesterday
Wind was the key weather word yesterday afternoon with gusts over 30 mph at most locations across southeast Arizona. East of Tucson gusts were high at typically windy spots with 40+ mph common. Pioneer Field reported gusts to 45 mph and Ft. Huachuca had 48 mph - highest I saw was gusts to 63 mph at the very exposed and windy Guthrie RAWS site. Above is MesoWest plot showing observed gusts at 2:00 pm MST.
Meanwhile, winter makes a return, regardless of what the calendar says, as the cold, 500 mb low heads northeastward. Photo below is from the Crazy Horse memorial web cam in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
From David Blanchard re May snow:
Flagstaff airport recorded 5.6" snowfall and 4" snow depth at 5 a.m. That snow depth matches what I measured at my house at 7 a.m. On Friday, we had rain, snow, and a few thunderstorms with graupel.
