Strong Frontal Passage During Early Morning Hours

Cool, damp morning here at house. Rainfall during early morning hours was 0.13" and low temperature dropped to 39F after the front went by. Strong winds attended the front with gusts of 40 to 50 mph common - lots of wind-blown debris on front porch this morning. The Atmo WRF forecasts proved quite accurate with the timing of the front and attendant precipitation bands. Heaviest precipitation amounts were at higher elevation sites. Highest elevations had mostly snow. Snow level dropped low enough for there to be some snow cover visible at sunrise - see photo above, looking north from backyard. The event was widespread, with 100 % of the ALERT gauges having precipitation - 12 sites had over half an inch and a couple had just over an inch. Amounts at highest levels were all snow and accumulations unknown at this time. Graphic below is time series of T and Td from Atmo, showing the strong temperature drop with the front right around 2 am MST. Winds gusted to 78 mph at the rooftop anemometer at Atmo. Other wind gusts of note from the RAWS network - 58 mph at Empire; 64 mph at Mt. Hopkins; and 81 mph at Guthrie. So, a nice event with enough rain to dampen the very dry soil here at low elevations. Next short-wave forecast to swing through Arizona during the day on Monday.
