Mostly Suppressed Yesterday In Immediate Tucson Area

The Tucson area was mostly under anvil cloud yesterday afternoon and also cooled by an out flow from storms to the southwest. Thus, only some anvil sprinkles. Nigthtime activity also avoided the area. The top image is the KEMX radar composite from 5:55 pm (MST) last evening, illustrating that most of storm activity was already over for southeastern Arizona. I checked the ALERT network at 5 pm and 8 of 93 sites (less than 10% areal coverage) had measured rainfall at that time - these were the far south and southwest sites, where heavy storms had occurred from Green Valley out toward Ajo. The ALERT data this morning indicates that no sites had rainfall during the night. The bottom graphic is the KEMX 24-hour rainfall estimate, indicating heaviest rains out to west of Green Valley. Yesterday was a good example day, showing the impact of early outflows and anvil cloud cover. Here at the house we had two slight spits of anvil rain, but it was a nice afternoon because of the cooler temperatures.
