Another Dreadful Day in Tucson

It has been another very hot and dry day in Tucson - high 105F, afternoon RH around 20%, and gusty northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph. Guess it's been a great month, considering that it is August, for folks running swamp coolers! Me, I've been out watering thirsty plants yet another evening. The evening 500 mb analysis (top) shows that the 500 mb anticyclone has shifted a bit to north and that winds are now easterly over extreme southern Arizona. Radar loops indeed indicate that echoes are trying to move toward the west. Has been a definite upturn today over the far east part of state and in Cochise County - lightning strikes way up, some rain with a RAWS station near New Mexico having almost an inch. The 7 pm composite radar image (bottom) from Tucson shows some activity continuing in Cochise County and that another large MCS is developing over northern Mexico, for the third night in a row. This MCS should produce more of a cool outflow into the Tucson area by morning and begin to make things more interesting here.
