Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park

On Monday, June 5th, we drove south from Prescott on Highway 89 over the Bradshaw Mountains and through Yarnell, Arizona. I had hoped to visit the Memorial Park dedicated to the Hotshot crew that perished in the Yarnell wildfire of 2013. The park has been open since last November.

It turns out that the memorial is located at the end of a long and difficult hike - above is the trailhead at the parking area along highway 89.

Brochure for the park shows the path of the trail below. The satellite image at bottom shows where the parking area is and blue "X" marks the approximate site of the memorial. This is a hike for the very fit, and my 73 year-old A-fibbing body is certainly not up to it. Although I had hoped to take some photos of the site of the tragedy, I ended up only seeing the trailhead.
