Summary July 18, 2011

Webcam view to north at 4 pm yesterday afternoon shows thunderstorm moving southeast into the northern portion of town and onto the Catalinas. This storm produced vivid cloud-to-ground lightning strikes near the house, but only light rain. A dissipating line of showers moved into town from the east just after dark, producing another brief period of light rain. Total precipitation here at house was 0.06" - most amounts in southeastern Arizona were light. The highest amount I saw was 0.63" at an ALERT station on Redington Pass. Airport had a Trace; Atmo had .02" with gust to 57 mph on roof; DM AFB had 0.09". The morning data from the Pima County ALERT network indicates 58 of 92 sites had rainfall yesterday (a bit over 60% areal coverage), and that 8 of 20 greater Tucson gauges had rainfall (40% areal coverage). Overall, an event that, with its limited CAPE and high cloud bases, served mainly to recycle more moisture into the lower elevations, via light rains, downdrafts and evaporation.
