An Ugly Wind Blows Across The Land
Winds early this morning are gusting over 80 mph at the Mt. Hopkins RAWS station (see post of October 19th for more details regarding the RAWS location and the Whipple Observatory complex). The last 24-hours have had winds continuously gusting well over 50 mph up there. The forecast Sonoita sounding below (from the 06 UTC WRF-GFS run at Atmo on 7 November and valid at 4:00 am MST this morning) indicates winds of around 40 kt below about 750 mb, and the observations at the RAWS site indicate gusts about double the forecast speeds.
At the higher elevation MMT facility, winds are only gusting from 50 to 60 mph (pressure level of the MMT is about 747 mb).
