Update 11 am MST - Simon Now A Category 3 Hurricane

Hurricane Simon has been rapidly intensifying during recent hours, A NOAA aircraft flight into the storm within the hour indicated maximum sustained surface winds of about 115 mph. This makes the storm currently a Category 3 hurricane, and it is the eighth major hurricane of the eastern Pacific season. The visible image below is from 1730 UTC.



Hurricane Simon continues moving west-northwesward away from southern Baja this morning. IR image above is from 1330 UTC. Current NHC forecast of Simon's track (below) takes the storm out to about 118 W before re-curving it northward and then northeastward. Simon will remain somewhat a question mark, wrt to impacts - if any - on southern Arizona, until early next week. Current WRF forecasts from Atmo keep high PW associated with Simon along and south of the border through midnight Monday night.
