So Far - Nice, Two-Part Rain Event

Rain and thunderstorms moved  into the Tucson area after 5:00 pm MST yesterday afternoon, and there were two rounds of thunderstorms and rainfall - one before midnight and then more early morning storms after about 4:00 am. Coverage across the ALERT network was only 4 sites for 12-hours ending at 5:00 pm yesterday, but was 100% for the 12-hours ending at 6:am this morning. Rainfall totals for last 24-hours are shown above for the ALERT metro-west sector. The time series for Atmo (which received almost 0.60") is shown below and illustrates the timing of the rain events, so far.

Here at house we had about 0.20" in the first event, which produced only one rumble of thunder. The early morning event had some vivid lightning and loud thunder crashes, but produced only 0.18" of rain - so total so far of 0.38".

Across the ALERT network there 24 sites with over half an inch, 5 sites with more than inch mostly higher elevation stations, and 1 site with over two inches (2.48" in the Las Guijas Mountains near Arivaca) - with most of that falling in a thunderstorm a bit before 5:00 pm last evening.

The plot of CG flashes above is for 24-hours ending at 6:30 am this morning (from Vaisala and Atmo) - thunderstorm activity in our part of state was concentrated in eastern half of Pima County, Santa Cruz County and western half of Cochise County. I saw that there was a severe thunderstorm gust to 62 mph at the Gila Bend airport yesterday afternoon. There was also one RAWS station (Empire) that had over an inch of rain.

All-in-all a nice rain event for October. The visible satellite image below (from 7:30 am MST) shows abundant clouds over Arizona, but with some spots of clear sky out to our west and southwest - with new showers apparently bubbling off to the southwest.
