Summaries June Through September - Edited

Pre-sunrise view of city lights and clear skies, as we begin a new month.

Here at the house there was no measurable precipitation during September. There was thunder and a sprinkle on the 8th - so a Trace with one "weather day."

This was the only September here with no measurable rainfall - my records extend back through 1999.

For June through September total here was 2.28 inches - driest in my period of record - in fact there have only been three times here when June through September rainfall was less than 4 inches.

Added plot below of average daily TUS dewpoint for June through September (from NWS webpage) - note the small number of days with average dewpoint above 54 F and the large number of days with dewpoint lower than the long-term average.

I wanted to examine the 30 day precipitation reports across the ALERT network, but noticed there were problems at two gauges (above) that were reporting rainfall during past 24-hours.

So, I snipped around those bad reports and got the figures above and below, which show September rainfall for stations that reported any. Only the northeast corner of the network received more than an inch of rain during the month. Most sites were like here at house with no rain for the entire month.

Mike Crimmins' Monsoon Summary plot (below) shows the how bad the summer rains were. During the 73 years of  record for the airport shown, this was the driest and also hottest summer during thos years - so glad to be saying goodbye to summer 2020.
