FedEx DC-10 landing or taking off at LAX - see at bottom.
Visible image above from 18 UTC today and total PW from MIMIC at 16 UTC below. The system out west of northern California is expected to impact southern Arizona on Thursday and Friday this week. The TPW shows a well-defined atmospheric river associated with the system to its east and south. Most of these rivers become dispersed crossing Baja and only a few events survive with the river coming into our area.
The midnight GEFS plumes (above PW and below precipitation) show the event, with PW remaining well-below and inch. The QPF plumes all indicate measurable rain here - but the range of possible QPF amounts in the forecasts is fairly large this far out - 0.08" to 0.85".
Just happened to catch a McDonnell-Douglas DC-10 landing or taking off at LAX. The last of these was built in December 1988 (30 years ago), and none are now flown by passenger airlines. However, many are still in service, as photo shows. They were a gas-guzzler with a not very good safety reputation.
