Thunderstorms Across Metro Last Night

We have been away for a couple of days and returned at mid-afternoon yesterday. By 7:00 pm MST (above) there were large storms north of the Catalinas and clouds were bubbling over the City. Several small thunderstorm cells moved northward across the City after dark and up through around midnight.

Detected CG flashes produced by the storms (above) for 24 hours ending at 2:00 am this morning, from Atmo and Vaisala). Radar below (base scan from 11:35 pm last night) shows the last heavy storm over Catalina Foothills.

Plot of 24-hour rainfall (from Mesowest above) is for period ending at 8:00 am this morning - the high-based storms produced mostly lightning (below), and little in the way of rain on the ground.

The storms occurred ahead of a sharp, 500 mb shortwave (below) that is moving northward across the state today.
