Some Wind Damage Yesterday Afternoon

Storms erupted early yesterday and impacted the higher elevations and the far south side of the metro area. Lightning strikes through 6 am MST (above) show the increased activity in the southeast part of the state. A severe storm produced wind damage and took down some power poles between the airport and Green Valley. During the past 24-hours 43 (~45% areal coverage) of the ALERT sites reported rainfall and amounts were mostly light as yesterday's model runs had indicated. However, 10 sites did have over 1/2" of rainfall, particularly in the Redington Pass area - see sector plot below. Here at the house we had a couple of outflows and some light anvil sprinkles, for another Trace day. Activity decayed rapidly by evening.

The Rillito was running some at sunrise for the second time in less than a week. During the night someone with 4-wheel drive vehicles had been running in the flow in the stream bed, making for an ugly mess this morning that included littered beer cans. Quite disgusting.

Dry air has moved into the southeast part of Arizona, from the east yet again, and the models forecast only some weak afternoon showers for the next two days. The blended PW product for 13 UTC this morning (above, from CIRA at Colorado State University) shows values of less than inch (the light blues) intruding into eastern Arizona, while the highest values hold out in the southwest part of the state.
