Along The Santa Fe Trail
Interstate 25 in northern New Mexico runs almost parallel to the mountain branch of the Santa Fe Trail - see above map of the trail. There is an interesting rest area near the ruins of old Fort Union (at one time the largest Army Fort in the West). Apparently the rest area originally had a small water pond at the base of its flagpole (see photo below). The old sign in front of the now deceased pond warns that the water is not for drinking and that visitors should not feed the fish. The pond is now home to tumbleweeds, as the photo shows.
The ruins of the Fort are now a National Monument and some of the ruins are shown below (not my photo). The buildings were built of adobe brick and only bits and pieces are left. The National Monument is a few miles west of I-25.
