Thunderstorm At House Last Evening
Updrafts and start of rainfall shown over west end of Catalinas a bit before 6 pm MST on the 15th of August. Finger Rock is near the left side of photo, which was taken looking north from house. By 6:20 pm (below) rain was falling more heavily, winds had gusted 25 to 35 mph from the north here at house and thunder was rumbling.
Radar image above from 6:17 pm indicates three cells over the Catalinas - largest one is that shown above in photos. There was considerable lightning activity from this storm with a number of nearby CGs. The core could not come off the foothills and new, but weaker updrafts developed along the Tucson Mountains as the storms over the Catlinas rained-out while drifting toward the southwest. All the storms had dissipated by 9 pm MST. Below shows CGs through 3 am this morning (16 August).
It was a nice storm but it only produced a Trace of rain here at the house. Across the ALERT network 13 sites (14%) had rainfall during the evening - see map below of west portion of network. Site at Finger Rock and Skyline Drive had 0.63" and site at Pima Wash and Ina had 0.51". Jim Toth, who lives near where the core of the storm drifted into the foothills, measured 0.70".
