July 2019 - Hot And Dry

View above looking down toward Jackson, Wyoming, where it is a cool and foggy morning.

Below shows July stats for TUS (from NWS website). It was the third hottest month since records began for Tucson. Here at house the July rainfall was 1.43" - the 6th driest in my 20+ years of record here. There were thunderstorms here on at least 6 days - probably more since I likely missed a couple due to my bad hearing.

Yesterday there was less thunderstorm activity than I expected, given morning sounding. There was some activity in southern part of metro (plot of detected CG flashes above is for 24-hours ending at 1:00 am MST this morning - from Atmo and Vaisala). Only nine ALERT sites measured rainfall, and amounts were quite light. TWC morning sounding (below) is quite similar to yesterday's - winds above 300 mb are a bit stronger and more southeasterly today. The general pattern is quite stagnant. The WRF forecasts this morning indicate isolated storms over eastern Pima County, with more activity to our south and east. August off to a dull start weather-wise.
