Quick Update on Labor Day

Storm and rain moving into north side of the city at 5:30 MST yesterday afternoon. At bottom is view a few minutes after sunset showing unusual purple hues.

Time series of T and Td for Atmo yesterday shows the huge temperature plunge that occurred with the onset of the storm (just over 30 F in a couple of hours). Plot of detected CG flashes (below - from Atmo and Vaisala) shows the activity confined to southeast Arizona, with numerous flashes in eastern Pima County.

ALERT observations of rainfall for 24 hours ending at 8:00 am this morning (above and below) shows numerous sites with half an inch or more. Here at house we had 0.85" with gusts estimated at 45 to 50 mph - airport had 0.33" with gusts to 47; DM measured 0.55" and Atmo had 0.47", both with gusts less than 40 mph. A widespread rain event to begin September, after our very wet July and August.

Today's outlook for thunderstorms from SPC (above) - sounding below shows slight CAPE and another degree of warming at 500 mb would just about eliminate the CAPE. Current TUS WFO forecast is second below and shows local office butting heads with SPC today. There were 13 severe storm reports yesterday  across southeastern Arizona - all reporting high or damaging wind gusts.
