Heavy Rains Last 48 Hours

Have been mostly away Friday afternoon and yesterday. Had 0.31" inches of rain in gauge on return last evening - think most of this fell on Friday while we were away. Appears that very heavy rains fell from storms on Friday evening, particularly from Rincons to northern Catalinas.

The three sectors of the ALERT network shown here (above and below) cover the 36-hour period ending at midnight last night - so the rainfall is from both the big storms Friday evening and also several heavy storms yesterday afternoon.  The amounts are quite large - greatest rain amount was at Park Tank on Redington Pass, but with many 1 to 4 inch amounts recorded.

Given the heavy rains, there was not a very large runoff flow measured at the USGS stream gauge Rillito at Dodge - above. Max flow appears to have been just over 1000 CFS around midnight Friday night.

The plot of detected CG flashes (above from Vaisala and Atmo for 24-hours ending at 1:00 am MST this morning) shows mostly storms yesterday afternoon but the black areas are the last of the Friday's big storms that continued past midnight.

This morning's sounding from TWC continues moist and unstable (PW about 1.5 inches with moderate CAPE). The southwesterly flow regime remains unfavorable for most low-elevation areas but continues very potent for the mountains and higher elevations. The 06 UTC runs of the WRF model at Atmo forecast storms again this afternoon on the mountains of eastern Pima County.
