A Peek At Conditions Over Northwest Mexico

Since it is the first week of June, I thought I'd look at the morning soundings from Mazatlan (lower graphic) and Guaymas (upper graphic), both on the west coast of Mexico. Mazatlan has a fairly respectable moist layer (theta-w of about 22C) but with a strong cap of dry air from the eastern Pacific above. Winds are L/V in the moist air, but strong westerlies prevail above 600 mb. To the north at Guaymas, the moist layer is very shallow (again with theta-w of about 22C) and winds below 700 mb are southerly. Flow above 600 mb is from the west off the eastern Pacific. Any boundary layer mixing that grows into the Pacific air leads to drying from above. Convection this time of year tends to be restricted to the higher elevations of the Sierra Madre off to the east of these sites, with the storms also trying to move to the east. I like to keep an eye on how the onset of summer is reflected in these Mexican soundings and will post a number of looks south this month.
