Quite an unpleasant afternoon as the winds are gusting in the 30 to 40 mph range with lots of dust in the boundary layer. Top image shows the dust in view looking north from Kitt Peak; middle image shows cumulus over the Catalinas; and bottom, visible satelllite image, shows the streets of cumulus that have developed over southeast arizona. All of this in advance of the unusually strong, for mid-June, short wave that is in the process of cutting-off over the lower Colorado River Basin. The NAM forecasts powerful, positive vorticity advection at 500 mb over southern and southeastern Arizona late tonight and tomorrow, so it will be interesting to see what this unusual system, with unfortunately little moisture available, brings us tomorrow!
