Mike Leuthold asks from out in the Pacific:
111? Atmo has not been over 107 all week. I wonder how DM compares?
Mike (still in humid cool Kauai-maybe never coming back?)
First - I have clipped google earth images centered on TUS airport (above), Davis Monthan AFB (below) and the Atmo Building (bottom). I am not sure exactly where the TUS and DM ASOS systems are located, but they are near the runways. The Atmo observations are taken at a weather station that is sited in the parking lot to the south-southwest of the symbol for the Atmo Building. The general environments around the observation sites are similar for TUS and DM (fairly open, semi-desert) but Atmo is in a distinctly urban environment with buildings, trees and grass nearby. I don't know how to find the "official" highs at Atmo but below are the DMAFB vs TUS high temperatures beginning June 1st.
1 - DMAFB 101F TUS 103F
2 105F 108F
3 105F 107F
4 105F 111F
5 105F 106F
So TUS generally a couple of degrees hotter than DMAFB for reasons that aren't obvious, but the 111F reading at the airport certainly was higher than both Atmo and DMAFB by a significant degree.
