Although the days around Christmas are often cool and showery here (e.g., showers on Christmas Eve or Christmas three of last five years), this year continues to look very dry across all of the Southwest. The 500 mb forecast (above, from 06 UTC GFS) is valid at noon on Christmas. The split flow pattern continues, with strong blocking to our north. The southern stream brings a fairly vigorous short wave to Arizona, but as per noted in previous posts, the system is starved for moisture. This is well-illustrated by the coresponding forecast for total precipitation through noon on Christmas below - nada for a very large portion of the western US.
