View from Professor Wyant's office of east Mall, where there is a vaccination drive-through setup. Place is very deserted, wet, and dreary this rainy morning. Down at bottom is a snowy view of the Sawmill Run restaurant up in Summerhaven.
NWS radar base scan indicates we're now at back edge of rain area (as per 7:20 am MST above), and currently we've got some light sprinkles here. I can see that snow level came very low on the foothills.
Morning 500 mb analysis (above) shows the elongated, S to N, 500 mb low centered over northwest Arizona. Note the very cold -30 C temperature observed at Tucson. Sounding (below) is very cold and with a low tropopause just above 500 mb. If there is sunshine by early afternoon, the cold air aloft may support some convective showers.
ALERT rainfall measurements (above and below) through 7:30 am show heaviest amounts (over half an inch) along a swath from southwest of the Tucson Mountains into the north and northwest parts of metro. Here at house we have had 0.65" during the night and early morning. This is the most rain in an event since the 1.76" on July 23rd of 2020. MesoWest at same time (second below) is similar.
Will be interesting to see if event is ending, or if more showers will develop as day progresses.
