Wallow Fire Continues Mostly Uncontained
The Wallow fire has now burned over 400,000 acres and is spreading into western New Mexico. The Horseshoe 2 fire also continues to burn in the southeast corner of Arizona. Winds were light yesterday afternoon (Friday), giving firefighters a chance for more agressive tactics - photo at top shows firefighters setting backfires on Friday. Middle satellite image shows the smoke plumes late on Thursday and bottom image shows wispy plumes just after sunrise today (Saturday, 11 Jun 2011). The forecast indicates a retun to gusty winds by afternoon, which is not good news. There's a very good graphic that shows the day-by-day expansion of the Wallow fire at: http://www.azcentral.com/news/wildfires/wallow/wallow-fire-timeline.php
