Dust From The Plains For May Day
The dust from the High Plains storm on Tuesday (see earlier post) moved across the Tucson metro area yesterday afternoon - above web cam view from campus is at about 6:30 pm MST. Photo below is from the house this morning at about 6:30 am - its an ugly start for May with more sneezing and other irritations for allergy sufferers.
Here at the house the wind has been gusting to around 35 to 40 mph. Above surface plot (from MesoWest) illustrates the large variability of wind gusts at 6 am MST across the area, with some spots being nearly calm while others have strong winds. (Note that one station along I-10 seems to report wind directions 180 degrees out of phase.) The fine dust in the air seems to be causing problems with the NWS ASOS sensors and most of them are reporting overcast skies, even though there are no clouds (as per DM observations, where someone may be correcting the ASOS data).
