Heavy cloud cover over Tucson at a bit before 8:00 am MST following a round of showers and thunderstorms,
Radar from 7:57 am (above) indicates storms in all directions, but with main metro area mostly quiet at this time, although storms appear to be forming south-southwest of here, when I take a look outside. Plot of CG flashes detected during 24-hours ending at 7:53 am (below - from Atmo and Vaisala) shows considerable, recent activity northern Pima County and off to our east-northeast.
Rainfall plot (above - for the three hours ending at 7:50 am) from the ALERT network shows the morning storms and rainfall affected mostly the northern half of the network - note the large number of sites with more than an inch. After a brief thunderstorm here, the gauge indicates 0.07", perhaps with more to come.
The 12 UTC sounding plot for TUS/TWC (below) indicates high PW, considerable CAPE, and a varying wind profile that turns from southerly below 500 mb to westerly above. Interestingly, the storm echoes have been moving toward the north-northeast. The plot also shows a moist absolutely unstable layer (MAUL) from about 800 to 600 mb - whether or not that has been wiped out by the storms is unknown.
