Little Change

View of Catalinas at about 6:00 am MST this morning, with a bit of cloud color.

It was another very quiet day over Arizona yesterday - main "weather" was the gusty east winds, along with hot temperatures. The plot of detected CG flashes (below, from Atmo and Vaisala for 24-hours ending at 0133 am this morning) shows only several flashes in northern Greenlee County, right along the New Mexico border.

At 500 mb (above), the anticyclone remains anchored over the Great Basin, with easterly winds over Arizona. The 12 UTC sounding plot for TWC/TUS (below) indicates that there will likely be no CAPE this afternoon, although PW has increased some to just over an inch. Wind speeds around 850 mb indicate that there may again be some gusty winds later this morning.

Main feature of interest continues to be Hurricane Kay and its future track. Shown above are 06 UTC track plumes from the ECMWF, which are very consistent. Below is the morning track forecast from NHC, indicating a brief period when the storm intensifies to moderate strength (winds greater than 110 mph).

It is very hard to anticipate Kay's impacts, if any, here in southeast Arizona. The current NWS forecast for the airport (at bottom) begins showing higher POPs for rain on Friday, continuing through the weekend.
