Storms Mostly South Yesterday
Although thunderstorms stayed mostly to south of metro yesterday, there was one lonely storm on north side of Catalinas - as per above.
Composite radar chart for 5:00 pm MST yesterday (above) shows fairly isolated storms to our south.
Plot of detected CG flashes (from Atmo and Vaisala - below) shows most thunderstorm activity this part of state along borderlands of Santa Cruz and Pima Counties.
Rainfall was reported at 13 ALERT sites yesterday - 8 in northern Catalinas and 5 along southern part of network. Heaviest amounts were 0.75" at Arivaca and 0.71" at Mt. Lemmon.
Today's morning sounding (plot above from SPC) is more conducive for thunderstorms than was yesterday's. Sounding continues moist with substantial CAPE in surface based layer, which has elevated old BL above acting as a cap. Looks like we'll need an outflow to trigger storms at low elevations. Forecast below (from 06 UTC run of WRF-GFS at Atmo) is valid at 5:00 pm this afternoon, with strong storms forecast for parts of metro area.
More interesting weather-watch for today than was Labor Day.
