Dusty Morning

Dust hanging in the air this morning obscures the Catalinas (above). Dust apparently was kicked up by a gust front moving south from Phoenix area to our west and then drifted in during the night.

ALERT precipitation map (below for 24-hours ending at 7:00 am MST) shows only isolated rainfall reports - two sites in west part of network had over half an inch. Here at house there was late afternoon shower that produced 0.01".

The 500 mb analysis this morning (above) shows a west-to-east elongated anticyclone from southwest New Mexico to Arkansas. There remains an inverted trough over the lower Colorado River Basin and a significant easterly wave over south Texas.

The morning TWC/TUS sounding (above) continues very moist, with considerable CAPE). The vertical wind profile features light and variable winds through the troposphere - I noted yesterday afternoon that direction of movement of radar echoes was quite random.

The WRF-RR forecast of little storm activity was best forecast for the day, and the WPC excessive rainfall outlook was a complete bust. The 12 UTC run of this model again forecasts very limited storm activity - forecast below is for total rainfall through midnight tonight.

The easterly wave (or tropical cyclone) over the Rio Grande is moving slowly west-northwestward. The GFS forecasts continue to bring the system into our region by late Wednesday - forecast below valid at 5:00 pm Wednesday afternoon.
