August 1st

Interesting view at 3:30 pm MST looking north from Loma Linda in Summerhaven - there appears to be a wall cloud and hint of funnel on left side of image. There was a report of one inch hail at Catalina, not far from this cloud feature.

Down at bottom is view of the Rincons at about 5:20 am MST this morning.

Plot of detected CG flashes from Atmo and Vaisala (above for 24-hours ending at 0833 UTC) shows considerable thunderstorm activity over much of eastern Pima County - thunder here at house around 5:30 pm. My outlook in previous post for a down day was obviously not very accurate.

Reports from the ALERT network (above and below, for 24-hours ending at 7:00 am) show widespread coverage (about 100 percent across metro area) and numerous heavy amounts over an inch. Here at house we were southwest of heavy activity and received only 0.27". Second below shows the 06 UTC WRF-GFS forecast for rainfall through midnight, indicating a mostly down day for Pima County.

Above is ALERT plot showing July rainfall - most sites across metro area had more than two inches during the month, but there some low reports along the interstate that appear suspect. The 0.55" report in metro area is from a site that has consistently bad, low reports.

Here at the house we had 2.78", which is the 9th highest amount for July since 1999.

Here are the outlooks for August temperature and precipitation from the NWS Climate Prediction Center (CPC). A cool and continued wet month to end the summer would be nice.
