Ups And Downs

View of Catalinas from campus a bit before sunrise this morning - middle clouds drifting around.

There were some thunderstorms around yesterday afternoon in eastern Pima County - detected CG flashes above for 24-hours ending at a bit before midnight last night.

Two graphics below are 24-hour rainfall ending at 6:00 am MST this morning, from MesoWest (first below) and from ALERT (second below). Light amounts occurred mostly east and south of  parts of metro and beyond. Each plot though has a report of over an inch - one near Saguaro NP and the other at Keystone Peak, east of Green Valley.

The 06 UTC WRF-GFS does forecast some isolated thunderstorms over eastern Pima County late morning and early afternoon - above forecast of composite radar valid at 12:30 pm today.

But drier air is coming in from west - forecast of PW from same model run valid at 6:00 pm indicates a strong, dry-line moving across our area this afternoon (below). The timing of the dry intrusion will determine what me might see around here later today. This morning's upper-air plot indicates PW of 1.41" and some CAPE, so morning sounding looks much more favorable for storms than it may be by early afternoon.

The dry air takes over through late in the coming week - so hotter and dry until we approach middle of month. Certainly a very ragged start to our summer thunderstorm season.
