June Summary - Start Of July

Very clear skies to start July - view south into Mexico from Kitt Peak above from bit before 7:30 am MST. June closed out with high of 108 F yesterday afternoon.

June summary - not much: hot with 0.04" precipitation on the 10th and thunderstorms on 1, or perhaps 2 days.

Thunderstorms yesterday afternoon again stayed mostly at higher elevations. Plot of CG flash density above is for 24-hours ending at 6:45 am this morning (from weather.graphics and Vaisala). Rainfall past 24-hours at only three Pima County ALERT sites (below). Another significant observation yesterday was - thunder at Ft. Huachuca with gusts to 48 mph and 0.13" of rain.

Forecast above is for total rainfall through 5:00 pm on July 8th (from 00 UTC WRF-GFS) is pretty dismal, if it verifies. As mentioned yesterday, we really need a feature to push low-level moisture into southern Arizona to make things more active our part of state.

Morning TWC sounding is more stable and model forecasts have some thunderstorms at higher elevations this afternoon, but with the activity shifted into Cochise County.

TS Barbara is forecast by NHC to become a moderate hurricane as it moves basically westward (below).
